The power of soft skills in IT education and training

Daniella is a software engineering student who is passionate about technology and its potential to solve real-world problems.

Like many, Daniella’s journey began with a network and software engineering degree — an intense focus on acquiring technical skills and know-how.

Transitioning from university to industry is a challenging mindset shift — from individual achievement to collective performance. The addition of organisational context and goals, as well as real-world requirements to work closely with others makes that transition challenging.

Daniella came to the realisation that while technical skills are important, they alone aren’t enough to succeed in the real world.

That’s where Evolutioned fits in. With their deep understanding of people, emotional intelligence and organisational dynamics, Evolutioned bridges the academic-industry chasm, elevating the individuals' self-awareness and capacity to amplify their potential through interpersonal and team dynamic skills.

“People are at the heart of everything, and recognising this is the first step towards success. You need to be able to be self-aware, communicate clearly, listen actively, give and receive feedback, resolve conflicts and motivate others.

“These skills help build trust, rapport and alignment with your team members and stakeholders. All are crucial to thrive and deliver remarkable outcomes in this digital era,” Daniella says.

Continuous improvement

“Technology is always evolving, yet skills for human-to-human interaction are timeless. The program taught me techniques and strategies on how to adapt to change and leverage fundamental soft skills to more effectively embrace new technologies that are critical for long-term success.

“At its core, the Evolutioned program is an enabler for better human-to-human connections. It inspired me to build out my professional relationships, seek out new mentors, and even pivot my degree to incorporate psychology components. It’s a wonderfully empowering experience to have had,” Daniella says.

Since the program, Daniella has taken on a part-time Scrum Master role outside of study, becoming a certified Scrum Master. The role requires Daniella to demonstrate situational leadership to facilitate effective collaboration and self-organisation behaviours within teams.

Soft skills for an enriching career

Daniella's career aspiration is to become a well-rounded software engineer who not only possesses strong technical expertise but also excels in team leadership, communication, and problem-solving. She envisions herself contributing to innovative projects that make a positive impact on society.

"My strong soft skills will play a pivotal role in my career trajectory, enabling me to excel in collaborative environments and effectively communicate complex technical concepts," she says.

Daniella’s journey highlights the importance of soft skills in the IT industry and demonstrates the potential of soft skills development to bridge the skills gap and propel individuals towards successful careers. Her commitment to continuous learning and dedication to enhancing her soft skills will undoubtedly pave the way for her to achieve her ambitious career goals.
