Youngster teaches older generation digital skills

Nathan Armstrong empowers older workers in his community with digital skills, fostering an inspiring and mutually beneficial connection.

Nathan Armstrong initially signed up to Youngster.Co for his internship while studying a Diploma of Information Technology (Game Development) at TAFE NSW in Coffs Harbour

Youngster.Co aims to bridge the digital divide, especially for the mature-aged workforce. The innovative intergenerational program connects tech-savvy youngsters with older workers, creating a seamless and non-threatening environment for digital upskilling. 

The program aligns with the Australian Digital Capability Framework’s (ADCF) ambition to make digital capability accessible to all Australians. It is not just about tackling immediate technological hurdles faced by older workers, but to instill a sense of digital confidence and adaptability.

Nathan was inspired by the opportunity, recognising that many older workers struggle to keep pace with the constant evolution of technology. 

“It’s important for people of all ages to have digital skills, as they are needed in everyday life. I love teaching people about technology and digital platforms. I try to make everyone feel comfortable with technology and not be overwhelmed or intimidated, I help them at their own pace and comfort,” Nathan says. 

Nathan has helped people in his community learn how to use mobile phones, navigate online shopping, communicate with friends and family, operate Smart TVs, and set up and utilise digital forms of identification like Seniors Cards, driver’s licences and Medicare cards. 

Skills gains

Since joining Youngster.Co, Nathan says he has developed a diverse set of skills, including communication and public speaking skills. 

“Being patient and calm is also important as it helps avoid tension and solve problems efficiently. It’s important to educate people about the benefits of technology." 

Nathan also touches on the importance of employment opportunities for young people, “Many young people struggle with unemployment, mental health and being unsociable, so by giving them a job it’ll help improve and benefit themselves.” 

Inspiring advice

“Listening to the stories that seniors tell of their many years of life is one of my favourite things about work. Everyone has a unique story to tell. Many have shown me photos of how they were raised and it’s very inspiring and interesting looking back in time.”

“Many have given me great advice about life and how to be successful. Someone I helped last year gave me great advice about being a role model for the future generations. The people I help are very thankful for the support.” 

Future Aspirations

Nathan hopes to work in graphic design, web design and game development someday, but says he’s very happy with his job right now, “To me, it’s a very rewarding experience and I feel thankful for having this opportunity”.

And it’s not just his workplace that inspires him, “My grandma is one of my greatest influences. She is currently 95 years old living on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. Her friendliness, caring nature and humour inspired me to work with seniors. And she still knows how to use an iPad really well”.
