Transforming education to employment with Generation Australia

Generation Australia is passionate about transforming education to employment systems to prepare, place, and support people into life-changing careers.

Operating across 18 countries globally, the Australian not-for-profit is pioneering the integration of industry into its training programs.

“We’re a demand-driven model. Our connection with employers comes at the start to understand what roles they're struggling to fill, such as those in cyber security, cloud computing and web development,” says Malcolm Kinns, CEO of Generation Australia.

"We are in constant conversation with industry stakeholders to understand what skills they need. Our focus extends beyond role-specific competencies to encompass broader skill sets such as AI, which are increasingly essential across all professional domains.”

“We then design bespoke curricula that addresses their talent needs with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion. This approach enhances organisational capability by tapping into untapped talent pools. It is intentionally designed to be a personalised journey of growth and development,” says Malcolm.

Education to sustainable careers

Generation Australia prides itself on regularly adapting its curriculum to ensure it keeps pace with rapidly changing industry needs.

“We ensure that our students are equipped for work, focusing on their capability, productivity, and retention from day one. It’s not just about that first job, but it's about supporting people into meaningful and sustainable careers.

“Beyond technical skills, we equip individuals with the behavioural skills and growth mindsets needed for lifelong learning.”

“I think human skills are critical for our graduates to secure future employment opportunities,” says Malcom.

Supporting instructor capability

Generation Australia seeks instructors who possess both industry expertise and a commitment to continuous learning, recognising the ever-changing landscape of industry.

“We have an instructional coaching team who constantly work with the instructors to develop their skills and ensure they are up to date with new content and training. This involves industry collaboration and internal training sessions for professional development.

“We have the ability for our instructional coaches to monitor sessions and provide real-time feedback for our instructors, so it's a constant evolution of our delivery,” adds Malcolm.

Diversity and inclusion

With a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, the not-for-profit provides opportunities for priority groups including First Nations people, those with a disability, neurodiverse individuals and women in tech.

“It's about building deep relationships and genuinely listening to the needs of the community,” says Malcolm.

“We are consistently bringing employers together to talk about these challenges and sharing our research on diversity, equity and inclusion.

“While there's been a fantastic shift with many organisations really looking into this space, we need our graduates to be even better than anyone else in the market to accelerate that process.

“Otherwise, we won’t be able to solve what we think is the bigger issue — changing hiring practices to recognise different skills and talents coming through.

“We see ourselves as almost a ‘proof of concept’, with the simple fact that we've had over 100,000 people around the world who have been able to move into roles and in many cases, multiply their wage,” says Malcolm.
