Finance, Technology and Business VET Workforce Project
Last updated: 26 March 2026
STATUS: ONGOING
Commencement date: October 2024
End date: June 2026
Overview
By partnering with industry and the VET sector, this project will strengthen digital capability and AI readiness across the VET workforce to support a more connected, future-ready training system.
This project researched and is now responding to workforce challenges that are most relevant to each Jobs and Skills Council’s industry needs, aligned with the VET Workforce Blueprint.
We are building on the completed Finance, Technology and Business VET Workforce Study, which examined the needs, challenges, and opportunities of the VET workforce across finance, technology, and business. The study underscored the importance of clear engagement frameworks to strengthen industry relationships and the need to leverage partnerships to expand access to high‑quality professional learning.
Two major activities are now underway to directly address these findings: Digital Capability Training for the VET Workforce, and the FSO Skills Accelerator-AI initiative.
Outcomes
Digital Capability Training for the VET Workforce
Delivered as part of FSO’s Digital Capability Training Product Trial (TPT), this activity focuses on developing, trialling and refining digital capability training for the VET workforce as a pilot.
- Trial draft Digital Capability Units of Competency (UoCs), contextualised for the VET workforce and aligned to the DigComp 3.0 framework
- Deliver the contextualised UoCs to a cross-industry sample of VET educators, trainers and administrators
- Trial different delivery approaches to support accessible, effective and practical professional development for the VET workforce
FSO Skills Accelerator-AI
An initiative that brings together vocational education and training (VET) and industry to connect, collaborate, and share best practices, expanding access to AI skills for VET learners, educators, and administrators.
- Pilot digital capability and AI training, contextualised to the VET workforce
- Co-design AI training and resources in partnership with industry, educators and trainers
- Strengthen professional learning opportunities for VET teachers, trainers and administrators
- Contribute to building a more connected, future-ready VET workforce
This project supports the VET workforce to develop stronger digital skills and practical AI know-how.
Impact
- For learners: Benefit from a VET workforce that is upskilled in digital capability and AI, resulting in training that keeps pace with industry change, supports stronger digital skills, and offers clearer career pathways.
- For training providers: Opportunity to strengthen digital and AI capability, supporting staff to maintain current skills and ensure delivery reflects evolving industry practice.
- For industry: A workforce better equipped to adopt digital and AI-enabled practices, with more graduates entering the field job-ready and prepared to meet evolving industry needs.
Background Information
Many of the skills shortages across the country rely on the VET workforce to teach and train Australia’s future workers. A secure and sustainable VET workforce is key to fixing skills shortages in the wider Australian economy.
The Finance, Technology and Business VET Workforce Study found that structured engagement frameworks are needed to strengthen relationships between the VET workforce and wider industry. It also identified the need to leverage industry relationships to improve access to high-quality professional learning.
Digital Capability Training for the VET Workforce: FSO is piloting digital capability – including AI training and resources – contextualised to the VET workforce. The training product is being developed based on the DigComp 3.0 framework and tested with VET practitioners from across industries.
FSO Skills Accelerator-AI: An initiative that brings together vocational education and training and industry to connect, collaborate, and share best practices, expanding access to AI skills for VET learners, educators, and administrators. Learn more and become a partner.
