You don’t need an engineering degree to enter this field. Many telecommunications technicians started with a trade certificate or a short course and built from there.

What is the role of AI in telecommunications?
AI-driven network management tools are increasingly used to monitor and maintain telecommunications infrastructure. However, the physical work of installing, testing and troubleshooting infrastructure cannot be automated. The ability to interpret monitoring data, apply experience to complex faults, and make responsible decisions in the field is what will define the next generation of telecommunications professionals.

Your learning pathway – from now to career-ready
There’s no single path into telecommunications. Short courses and trade certificates are a common and practical entry point. VET qualifications provide structured, nationally recognised training. A university degree in engineering opens doors to more specialised design and architecture roles. Many people combine elements of all three.
Many entry-level roles are accessible with a Certificate II or III. Apprenticeships and paid traineeships are also common pathways in. Choose your starting point based on your background, goals and the roles you’re targeting.
