FSO Project - Training Package Projects

Specialist Artificial Intelligence

Project Overview

Anticipated Commencement Date: April 2025

Anticipated Completion Date: February 2027

This training product development activity will update the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) training package with new and urgent training products related to the skills needed to work with generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI).

This project will include the development of:

  • generalist Gen AI training products, to respond to demand across a range of industries, and

  • specialist Gen AI training products, aligned with relevant technology industry roles.

Specialist skills Generative Artificial Intelligence will support organisations associated with building AI apps and technologies to ensure there is a national skills response to this transformative and fast changing sector.

In recognition of the urgent need for generalist Gen AI training products, this project will trial and evaluate the delivery of Gen AI training products through a Training Product Trial to address the need for suitable training solutions. This training will be made available concurrently as the training product development process continues as per the Training Package Organising Framework (TPOF) requirements.

These generalist training products will support Gen AI adoption across the economy, particularly for small and medium business.

Background Information

There is a need for nationally available training to meet both the needs of employers, learners and industry more broadly for Gen AI skills. This would support a better understanding of Gen AI and improve adoption of Gen AI to support productivity.

The demand for Gen AI generalist skills uplift must be met more urgently to enable key cohorts, such as employers and workers, to access Gen AI skills.

Consultation as part of the current FSO Activity ICT Training Package Needs and Gaps Analysis, and FSO’s 2024 Workforce Plan has confirmed the need for specialist Gen AI training products, which are not currently available as a national VET training product.

Peak industry bodies report that many businesses, particularly SMBs, have not adopted AI into their work practices. E.g. ACCI’s report, Accelerating the Potential of AI in Business, identified that only 25% of SMBs are in the process of adopting AI. AI Group’s 2024 Workforce Survey found that 41% of businesses reported ‘no engagement’ with AI, with SMBs most likely to report no engagement.

Consultation and Feedback

The Future Skills Organisation (FSO) will develop a Consultation Strategy as part of the Project Plan. This strategy will involve various consultation methods.

The TPOF details the requirements for the process of development and endorsement including the establishment of a Technical Committee. The composition of the Technical Committee is detailed in the TPOF and must be followed to ensure representation is consistent across all training product projects.

We will call for Expressions of Interest for the Technical Committee in May 2025.
