Generalist and Specialist Cyber Security Skills

Project Overview

Anticipated Commencement Date: May 2025

Anticipated Completion Date: February 2027

This training product development activity will update the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) training package with new training products.

·       generalist cyber security training products, to respond to demand across industries and occupations

·       specialist cyber security training products, aligned with relevant technology industry roles. 

This training will contribute to the goals of the 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.

In recognition of the urgent need for fit-for-purpose cyber security training products, this project will trial and evaluate the delivery of cyber security training products through a Training Product Trial to address the need for suitable training solutions. This training will be made available concurrently as the training product development process continues as per the Training Package Organising Framework (TPOF) requirements.

Background Information

The 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy aims to grow and professionalise the national cyber workforce by addressing the shortage of cyber professionals and the mismatch between job requirements and employee skills. The strategy highlights the role of Jobs and Skills Councils in assessing workforce needs and delivering relevant training. Preliminary findings indicate a critical skills gap in emerging specialist cyber security skills and the need for agile, flexible training products. There is also a lack of clearly defined pathways for career progression and outdated training content that fails to keep up with industry standards and technological advancements.

Consultation and Feedback

The Future Skills Organisation (FSO) will develop a Consultation Strategy as part of the Project Plan. This strategy will involve various consultation methods.

The TPOF details the requirements for the process of development and endorsement including the establishment of a Technical Committee. The composition of the Technical Committee is detailed in the TPOF and must be followed to ensure representation is consistent across all training product projects.

We will call for Expressions of Interest for the Technical Committee in April 2025.
